History & Background

Harrisburg Elementary School is located in the small town of Harrisburg, North Carolina, in the Cabarrus County School district. Harrisburg has a population of over 17,000 and growing.  Our school is approximately 12.5 miles from Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina and second largest banking/financial center in the United States.  Harrisburg Elementary was originally established as a high school in 1927 and was located on Highway 49 in the center of Harrisburg.  In the 1970's, Harrisburg High School was transformed into an elementary school due to the population growth in the area.  In 2000, Harrisburg Elementary was relocated to its current location on Stallings Road.  Currently, our school serves close to 600 kindergarten through fifth grade students, but has had over 1000 students in any given year.  We have 46 highly qualified teachers on staff and 13 non-certified staff members that strive to provide the best education and service to the students, parents, and community in our school district.

Within the past ten years, the State of North Carolina has recognized Harrisburg Elementary School as a "School of Distinction" five times and a "Honor School of Excellence" four times.  Harrisburg Elementary School has also been a “Globally Recognized” school since 2018 and offers an Immersion Mandarin program beginning in kindergarten. Instructional programs across all grade levels include advanced math classes and inquiry-based hands-on science instruction. Harrisburg also offers academically-intellectually gifted programs and multiple clubs and organizations run by the dedicated staff. Harrisburg students have competed in the District Spelling Bee, the State Geography Bee, County Math 24 competitions, Thinking Caps Quiz Bowl, Knowledge Masters, Math Olympiad, and the District Battle of the Books. Our students also participated in several Broadway Jr. productions.
